Vice-Chancellor statement: research funding
We have made the arguments as forcefully as we can to Ministers. Every single percentage cut in research funding will have consequences.
There is no substitute for government funding of our research base; it maintains our international profile and supports our economy. It is also the reason why the UK is still home to large industries; for example, government support for biomedical research and the expertise that creates is the reason the big pharmaceuticals have a UK base. If the research effort falls away then big industry will move on to countries which are making substantial investment into research - the US, Australia, Switzerland, France and Germany among them - and we will pay a high price in the loss of jobs and government revenue.
