Prof. Mojtaba Ghadiri

Professor Ghadiri graduated in Chemical Engineering from the University of Tehran, and subsequently obtained a MSc from Imperial College and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He then worked for Unilever Research as a scientist for two years before joining the University of Surrey in 1983. At Surrey, he held the Chair of Particle Technology. In 2001, Professor Ghadiri was appointed Director of the Institute of Particle Science and Engineering at the University of Leeds. Professor Ghadiri has been a Senior Visiting Scientist at Shell Research B.V., Amsterdam, and a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Salerno, Calabria and Florida.

Research Interests

Professor Ghadiri's current research activities cover a number of independent but fundamentally related topics in Particle Technology and are supported by EPSRC and industry. Some examples of Professor Ghadiri's work include the development of specialised facilities for mechanical testing of particulate solids on micrometre scale and high speed motion analysis. At Leeds, a wide range of instruments are also available for particle size and shape characterisation. His work on the electrostatic effects, which led to the invention of the Electromechanical Valve for Solids, has recently been expanded to include electrospraying, emulsification and emulsion breakdown by electrostatic means. Finally, a new area of activity has started on spraying and coating by supercritical CO2 processing. For more details on each of these topics please visit the section on research projects.
