“If I belong to anyone on this earth... I belong to you.” This devised production was based on the writings of the German playwright Frank Wedekind, acclaimed as a “prophet of darkness” and the father of expressionism. Wedekind’s plays were originally considered as pornographic and only performed in censored versions. He focused on the problems of puberty, issues of sexual freedom and moments of ecstasy, misunderstanding and violence between the sexes. Inspired by The Lulu Plays, (Earth Spirit and Pandora’s Box) and interweaving some excerpts of Spring Awakening, the company created an immersive environment in a theatre space which was stripped of its seating and became a container – literally a box which held this design-led performance. The audience entered the space and found themselves invited to both look and to be observed within a labyrinth of corridors and spaces with doorways and windows. A variety of scenes were glimpsed within this world, whilst many versions of Lulu – our central protagonist were encountered. The environment and multiple persona reflected both Lulu’s own fractured experience and the numerous ways in which she is perceived by the characters who she encounters throughout her life. Audience responses to Pandora’s Box “a unique, extraordinary experience” “The best thing seen on stage (or around the stage…) in Leeds for a long, long time.” Leeds Student Review
