BA (Hons) Managing Performance

Helena Wade

About me

I am very sociable and try to make the most of both the academic and social sides of university life. My main interests revolve around the events industry, not only do I enjoy attending events I have a passion for organising them too. Something that goes hand in hand with this is my passion for music and I have recently taken up Djing as a hobby.

Why I chose PCI and Leeds

I chose to study at Leeds because it is a great student city. I knew that I would be able to gain a degree from one of the country’s top universities whilst still enjoying the vibrant, youthful city.  My attraction to PCI itself was its fantastic facilities and workspaces in the centre of the university campus.

My passion for Managing Performance

I have enjoyed studying Managing Performance because it is not a conventional course. The ability for me to tailor this degree to my needs was a great advantage and has made it all the more entertaining. I have always had a keen interest in business and this course has allowed me to learn all the necessary managerial skills in a practical and engaging manner. The collaborative modules ensure you get to work with a wide range of people and have fun at the same time. Finally, it sounds a bit geeky but I have also enjoyed the assessments in some modules, such as creating business and marketing plans as well as portfolios.

My experience so far…
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leeds Uni and will be sad to leave. My course choice has given me many opportunities which have contributed to how much fun I’ve had in the last three years. Collaborative Project in year one saw us all thrown into workshops together, allowing us to make new friends immediately. A highlight for me in year 2 was working with external partners, West Yorkshire Fire Service and Leeds City Council to produce an educational piece on road safety. This allowed me to see how work we produced could be considered in a professional context. I think this, my final year however has been my favourite, the ability to effectively do whatever I wanted in Enterprise Project has allowed me to produce work I am very proud of and will contribute greatly to my CV. I am now looking forward to my Independent Industry Study placement at a marketing firm in London.

Getting involved
As I mentioned before, Leeds Uni has given me so many different opportunities. I have been involved in the organisation of three fashion shows, two external and one internal. Each of these has allowed me to put skills learnt on my course into practice. I have also been involved in a SIFE group, this is an organisation designed to set up small business ventures to help others.

My aspirations
After leaving uni I hope to go into the field of marketing and after my industry placement I should have more of an idea if this is the career for me. In the long term I wish to own my own business, a risky idea which I may not have thought of before university, but now see as an exciting venture.
