The EPP

Extract from EPP - The European Peoples Party leaflet

Unifying Europe is coming about through people who are committed to working across national boundaries for a common future in Europe. Many of them are doing just that in the EPP

Presidency Council Congress
The eight strong EPP presidency consists of President Wilfried Martens and 7 Vice-Presidents. The Party presidents and Secretaries-General of EPP member parties, EU commissioners politically close to the EPP, and the EPP Presidency, meet four times a year under the presidency of the French Minister for Eductaion, Francois Bayrou, as the EPP Council. The EPP Congress meets every two years and decides - like any national party congress - on political directions, and on the party programme.
This body ensures the party's permanent political presence They work on solutions to European problems It also elects the presidency

In the European Parliament In the Council of Europe, the WEU, OSCE and the Committee of Regions
The EPP Group in the EP has 173 members (February 1996), which is about 30% of the total number of MEPs. The EPP is a powerful force in the Council of Europe, in the Western European Union, in the Organisations for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and in the Committee of Regions.
Few decisions made by Parliament can be reached without the Group's agreement. With Leni Fischer (CDU), President of the Parliamentary Assembly in the OSCE, Christian Democrats now secure key positions of responsibilty for security, stability, and the mointoring of human rights in the new Europe.
Since 1994, Wilfried Martens has been president of the EPP Group in Parliament as well.
The party and the Group work closely together in many areas. Political concensus is reached, for instance, in the common working groups.
The political basis of the Group is the party programme.

The EPP opens to the East

The integration of Central and Eastern European Countries into the EU is one of the greatest challenges we will face in the years to come. Europe's Christian Democrats have accepted this challenge.

The EPP's partner assoiccation, the European Union of Christain Democrats (EUCD), and its President Wim Van Velzen, offer the parties of Central and Eastern Europe a forum for Christian Democratic cooperation. The goal is to integrate the EUCD into the EPP by the end of 1998.
