MA Applied Translation Studies

Entry requirements

UK Students: Candidates will be expected to have a good first degree in one or two foreign languages. Candidates without a degree may be considered in exceptional circumstances. Non-UK Students: Candidates will be expected to have a good first degree in English. Candidates with other relevant backgrounds may be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Objectives

The Leeds MA in Applied Translation Studies (MAATS) is a flexible programme designed to equip students with the skills needed by a professional translator or - depending on the individual student's interest - to act as the foundation for a research degree in the field. The MA provides training in written translation into English from one or two of the following languages (subject to availability): Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Additionally, training is offered from English into Bulgarian, Chinese and Japanese. MAATS places unique emphasis on giving students the computer-assisted translation skills increasingly required by international organisations and major translation companies; by the end of the programme students should be confident and proficient users of such industry standard terminology management and translation memory systems as IBM TranslationManager (TM), and TRADOS Multiterm (TM) and Translator's Workbench (TM), and STAR TermSTAR (TM) and TRANSIT (TM).

MA World Cinema

Entry requirements

BA (Hons) or equivalent.

Objectives

By the end of this programme, students should be able to: demonstrate understanding of key debates in and approaches to the study of World Cinema; demonstrate familiarity with many of the main World Cinemas and their socio-political contexts; undertake sustained independent research applying relevant methodologies.

MA Advanced Professional Language Studies

Entry requirements

Good first degree in two modern languages (Joint Honours, Major/Minor or equivalent).

By the end of this programme, students should have acquired and mastered advanced language skills in two languages.

Objectives

By the end of this programme students should be able to apply the interpreting skills they have acquired in a professional capacity. These skills include: competence in sound note-taking; good memory coompetence; the ability to summarise main points in a speech; the ability to anticipate, compress and articulate the information clearly and coherently; the ability to work in a team, perform to an audience and cope under stress. Students should also have gained a grounding in translation theory and practice.
