OVER 150 tonnes of waste paper was collected around the campus in the first year of the cleaning services’ recycling scheme.
800 green drums, 70 collection bins and three secure skips have been placed around the campus in a partnership between Cleaning Services and contractor M&B Waste Management.
The scheme was introduced for both environmental and financial reasons. Last year refuse collection cost the University £78,000.
Staff are asked to put all good quality white, coloured, fax and computer paper – as well as envelopes, brown paper, magazines and even tissue paper – into the green drums.

Reduced-rate memberships of the Leeds David Lloyd centre are available for University staff.
For example, a year’s ‘Health & Fitness’ individual membership is available for £52 per month, with the £240 joining fee waived.
The reduced membership offer at the club in Tongue Lane, Moortown, is available until the end of October.

A vacancy exists in the technical and ancillary area of the support staff advisory group. The group meets three times a year to discuss matters of concern and act as a channel of communication for support staff. Anyone interested should contact Kathy Chesworth in human resources on ext 4145.
In response to growing enquiries from clients, ULIS Consultancy Division is inviting new registrations from members of staff interested in joining its consultancy database.
With permission, most academics are contractually entitled to undertake 30 days consultancy work and receive fees without deduction from salary.

Residential and Commercial Services are seeking members of the academic, academic-related or senior administrative staff for three adviser positions.
Two non-residential advisers are required, one to students in family acommodation, and the second to students in the Cromer, Woodsley and Springfield group of flats. The third post is residential and is for one of a team of two advisers to students in Montague Burton and St Mark’s flats.
Primary responsibilities are the pastoral care of the students and the maintenance of discipline.

- Gordon Humphreys retired as warden of Tetley Hall in July after 14 years. The new warden is Dr Paul Boyle of Geography.
Places are still available at the Children’s Centre nursery school for children aged two and a half to five years old.
The educational nursery school is staffed by qualified teachers and nursery nurses. It is open from 8am to 5.15pm, for children of all university staff and students.
A full-time place in the school costs £85 per week, and part-time places are also available.

The Estates Office is to allocate funding for two projects from the Minor Works fund during 1998/1999. The deadline for applications is November 2, but departments are required to register their intent to apply by October 5 by giving a brief statement and location of works.

The University’s job share policy has been agreed by Senate and is now being implemented. The policy aims to encourage and support the development of flexible working practices where appropriate, in the interests of both employee and employer.

The busy 1998/9 concert programme features a second year in
residency for the Sorrel String Quartet, who will be playing in the
Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall next month. Other highlights include
the Autumn Festival ‘Sacred and Profane’and a concert of new
music by composers from the Department of Music.
