Information for prospective students

The Rothschild Community of Excellence Programme gives talented mathematicians and scientists the opportunity to study for a mathematics or science secondary school PGCE whilst taking part in cutting edge research at the University of Leeds. Over two years, you will spend half your time learning and practising teaching skills and half your time working towards a Masters by Research on a research project of your choice. The course is full time over the two years and is fully funded including all fees and a maintenance grant of £10,000 per year.

PGCE in Secondary Science or Mathematics
Teaching is both challenging and rewarding, hard work and fun, and provides one of the most worthwhile of all careers.

This section of the programme will prepare you to teach as a subject specialist in either mathematics or science. It will follow the standard PGCE course delivered by the School of Education, split equally over the two years, with a school placement each year. The placements will be in two local secondary schools who have recently gained specialist status. These schools have a special focus on their chosen subject area but also meet the National Curriculum requirements and deliver a broad and balanced education to all pupils.

For more information on the PGCE section of the course, please see the webpage of the School of Education.

MSc by Research
Half of each year of the programme will be spent in the Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences contributing to current research. You will be expected to extend your knowledge of a chosen subject by attending lectures and private study and then work on an area of research under the supervision of an academic member of the faculty. Examination will be by dissertation which must be presented by the end of August in your final year.

Projects for the MSc should be computational or theoretically based. Experimental projects are not suitable due to the short duration of the MSc. For more information on the areas of research within the faculty, please visit the web pages of the participating departments:

"" School of Mathematics
"" School of Chemistry
"" School of Physics and Astronomy
"" Department of Colour and Polymer Chemistry
"" Procter Department of Food Science

Please be aware that most of the projects detailed on these pages are designed to be PhD rather than MSc projects. You should use these pages as an indication of the fields of research that are found at the University of Leeds, and in your application explain which areas you would be interested in being involved. Sucessful applicants will then devise an appropriate MSc project with a supervisor in this area.

Whilst studying, you will be expected to be involved with the University's series of aspiration and attainment raising activities provided for the Rothschild Community of Excellence schools. This may include helping present hands-on activities in your department.
