Ian Haslam

Head of Radiation Protection
Radiation Protection Adviser
Laser Safety Adviser
34203 i.k.haslam@leeds.ac.uk

Head of Radiation Protection at the University of Leeds and a chartered member of the Society for Radiation Protection.

Ian was awarded his PhD in oceanography by the University of Liverpool, basing his thesis on his studies into the chemistry of trace elements in the marine environment and the role of bio-geochemical processes in controlling the movement and distribution of trace metals in the water column and sea bed sediments.

In 1990 he was recruited to the Environmental Assessments Department of the National Radiological Protection Board (now the Health Protection Agency) to carry out investigations into the behaviour and transport of radionuclides in coastal environments and the coastal margins, and the potential impact of global warming on the stability of sea-bed sediments contaminated with radionuclides discharged from the Sellafield nuclear fuel reprocessing plant. Areas of particular interest included areas along the eastern and southern boundaries of the Irish Sea susceptible inundation through storm surges and coastal flooding.

In 1997 he moved to Loughborough University and held the post of Senior Radiation Protection Adviser in the Environmental Radiochemistry Research Group of the department of Chemistry. In 1999 he was recruited to lead the Radiation Protection Service at the University of Leeds.

Radiation Protection Manager at the University of Leeds, a member of the Association of University Radiation Protection Officers, and an Associate of the Royal College of Science.

After graduating with a degree in Physics from Imperial College London Andrew completed an MSc in Medical Physics at the University of Leeds. His dissertation was concerned with the measurement of lineal energy event-size spectra in tissue equivalent materials.

Andrew joined the Radiation Protection Service in 1983.
