Welcome to the University of Leeds. Leeds is a major research-intensive university with a truly international outlook. Our research is increasingly making an impact on global society. We have mutually beneficial relationships with a range of partners from small local companies to major multinationals which all benefit from the expertise of our researchers.

Research students are an essential part of research activity at Leeds and are valued for their contributions to the academic community. Great importance is placed on the success and personal development of each student. With this in mind the University has developed a set of standards for research supervision and support which are leading the way in UK research training.

Each of the University's nine Faculties has a Faculty Graduate School headed by an Academic Director. The Graduate Schools provide training for research students at Faculty level and provide opportunities for research students to interact academically and socially through the organisation of conferences, seminars and social events. Research students are represented on Faculty Graduate School Committees, to strengthen discussions and decisions about future University policy for research degrees.

All research students also have the opportunity, on a regular basis, to participate in questionnaires about their experience at the University. The University values the information provided in these questionnaires in order to review and enhance the existing arrangements.

The University recognises the crucial importance of postgraduate researchers in the contribution they make to the vitality and growth of the University’s research environment.  As one of its key priorities, the University has been working to enhance even further the postgraduate research experience, to improve the support and opportunities that are offered.   This year will also see the second Annual University of Leeds Postgraduate Researcher Conference, ‘Showcase’; this will provide the opportunity for research students to present their research to the academic community of the University.
