Entrance Requirements

Research Degree candidates normally hold a first-class or second-class honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in a subject relevant to their proposed field of research. Applicants without such qualifications may be accepted in special circumstances but they will have to demonstrate their suitability by taking examinations or by other appropriate means, both before and during their studies.

Candidates whose first language is not English must provide evidence that their English language is sufficient to meet the specific demands of their study. Candidates will normally be expected to have obtained one of the following qualifications:

  • » the British Council IELTS with a score of 6.0 (with not less than 5.5 in any component);
  • » the internet based TOEFL (iBT) with 87 overall (with not less than 21 in listening, 22 in reading, 23 in speaking and 21 in writing).
The University's Graduate Board has approved the use of other English language qualifications which are considered to be of an equivalent level to those listed above. More information about acceptable English language qualifications can be obtained from Research Student Administration, email Rp_Applications@adm.leeds.ac.uk.

Please note that some Schools and Departments may require an English Language qualification above the stipulated minimum.
