It is the responsibility of the supervisor(s), in consultation with the Postgraduate Research Tutor where appropriate, to recommend suitable Examiners for appointment to the Examinations Group of the Graduate Board. The Examinations Group is responsible for the decision for the appointment of examiners.
Examiners must fulfil the University’s criteria regarding Eligibility to Act as an Internal Examiner
for research degree programmes. Supervisors are asked to consult the criteria before completing recommendations.
Please note, no recommendation for the appointment of an Internal Examiner should be sent forward unless the proposed Internal Examiner has informally agreed that they are prepared to act. The Internal Examiner should be asked to sign the appropriate section of the Examination Entry Form to confirm his/her agreement to act in this capacity.
Further information on procedural matters is provided in the Guide for Research Degree Supervisors which is compiled annually by Research Student Administration (RSA).

This serves as a separate, “stand-alone” document to the main eligibility criteria for Internal Examiners (above) for use by YSJU staff only. The eligibility criteria for the appointment of external examiners is provided on a separate page. Any questions or queries with these arrangements can be directed by email to the Thesis Examination Section of RSA rp_examinations@adm.leeds.ac.uk
