Getting the Degree and Graduating

On this page you will find information about publication of pass lists, graduation choices and how to register and important deadlines in order to be eligible to graduate at the next set of degree ceremonies. Please also see the Research Student Handbook for advice.

Publication of Pass List
Pass Lists are published regularly throughout the year in the Student Services Centre foyer. Your name can appear on a pass list once all the following conditions have been met:

  • » the examiners’ report has been approved by the Graduate Board’s Examinations Group at one if it’s meetings;
  • » RSA has received confirmation that the internal examiner is satisfied that any corrections required to the thesis have been completed;
  • » RSA has received the final, hard bound version of the thesis with a fully completed thesis deposit form;
  • » For candidates commencing study from September 2009 onwards, RSA has also received the final version of the thesis in pdf eThesis format;
  • » all debts to the University have been paid - this includes payments of all fees and fines, and returning all library books

Graduation Options
There are three graduation options available to you:

  • » In absentia (Your certificate is posted to an address of your choosing and you may not attend a ceremony)
  • » July graduation ceremonies (Your certificate is handed to you at a July ceremony)
  • » December graduation ceremonies (Your certificate is handed to you at a December ceremony).

General information about degree ceremonies, including information on gown hire, tickets, ceremony dates/times can be found on the Graduation website.

How to make your graduation choice
You will be required to register your graduation choice (either a ceremony or in absentia) on-line after you have submitted your thesis for examination. You will be given further instructions when you submit your thesis but these are also available on the Graduation website.
Please note that registration for graduation is open at certain points in the year. You should go ahead and register your preference even if you are unsure that your name will be included on a pass list in time for the next set of ceremonies. Attendance at a degree ceremony is not guaranteed and is subject to the satisfactory award of your degree before the relevant ceremonies. In the event that you are not awarded in time, you will be able to return to the graduation registration pages and update your choice.
