Responsibility: The responsible person (Head of School or Service) retains overall responsibility.


Standard Roles
C1 - Governance
>> Ensure effective means of governing the health, safety, and welfare of employees, students, visitors and contractors in the workplace have been implemented

>> Sufficient resources in terms of time and money must be allocated to allow effective management of health, safety, and welfare in the workplace

 
C2 - Health and safety management
>> Effective means for managing health, safety, and welfare in the workplace must be implemented within faculties and services

>> Ensure sufficient time and resources are allocated to ensure effective management of health, safety, and welfare in the workplace
   
C3 - Employees, research staff and students
>> Must communicate any concerns regarding their workplace to their line manager

>> Must not misuse equipment
>> Cooperate with their employers in meeting their legal obligations
   
C4 - Procedures, information and training
>> Those who will be required to assess the competence of contractors etc must be provided with suitable training and be deemed competent to undertake this duty.

C5 - Risk assessment
>> Ensure appropriate assessments for the workplace have been completed

>> Ensure controls identified in the assessment are implemented
>> Ensure assessments are reviewed regularly and when a significant change to the assessed risk has occurred (such as a change in process after accident, etc)

>> Ensure suitable and sufficient information is used to carry out the risk assessment

C8 - Design, commissioning and installation

C9 - Statutory inspection and examination
>> Ensure any equipment provided for safety in the workplace is inspected and maintained in accordance with the regulations, and records of this are maintained (for at least three years)

>> Ensure appropriate systems for maintenance of the workplace (including equipment) are identified, assessed for their appropriateness and implemented

C12 - Cooperation between employers
>> Ensure cooperation, communication and coordination between all parties sharing a workplace

>> Ensure an employer is identified as the party responsible for a workplace or equipment and that they take ownership of issues relating to meeting the requirements of the regulations (such as housekeeping, maintenance etc.)
   
C13 - Emergency planning, contingency plans and emergency actions
>> Contingency plans, as determined by a risk assessment, must be prepared to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of employees, students, contractors and visitors in the workplace (for example, in the event of essential services such as water, heating, cooling or power failing)

C14 - Environmental management and waste disposal
>> Waste must be disposed of in accordance with University standards and guidance in order to meet the requirements of environmental legislation and best practices

>> Systems must be put in place to ensure a high standard of housekeeping is maintained so that waste is not allowed to accumulate and the workplace is kept clean
