Standards
The University takes a risk-based approach to managing fieldwork and expects that:
- Fieldwork organisers identify their activity as low, medium or high risk and produce the relevant risk assessment before the fieldwork is undertaken.
- Participants are effectively briefed before the fieldwork begins and receive all relevant appropriate training, induction, information and management supervision.
- Suitable contingency plans are developed and in place ready for implementation with identified roles and actions.
- All appropriate control measures are put in place to minimise risks.
- Any accidents or near misses will be reported using Sentinel, the University online accident reporting system. If fatalities, hospitalisation or serious injuries (e.g. broken bones) occur, or if participants are absent from work or study for more than three days these must be reported immediately.
- All risk assessments and related documents are shared with relevant people and recorded in a safe place forthe duration of the activity, unless an incident (accident or near miss to people or property) occurs.
- If an incident occurs, records are kept for a minimum of 3 years - or if the participant involved is under 18, then until they reach 21. If the incident involves complex legislation (e.g. COSHH, GM or radiation) Health and Safety Managers will advise.
