>> Faculties and services must ensure local procedures comply with the University arrangements
>> No work giving rise to healthcare waste can be carried out unless these arrangements are put in place
>> Faculties and services producing healthcare waste for the first time or infrequently must notify cleaning services and health and safety services.
   
C3 - Employees, research staff and students
>> Must abide by the arrangements put in place for collection and disposal of healthcare waste

>> Communicate concerns regarding any aspect of healthcare waste collection or disposal with their line manager
>> Cooperate with their employers in meeting their legal obligations
   
C4 - Procedures, information and training
>> Employees, students, visitors and contractors must receive appropriate information, instruction, and training on the safe collection and disposal procedures for healthcare and non-recyclable wasteHealthcare and non-recyclable wastes will be tagged with Faculty specific colour coded tags and collections recorded on waste consignment notes approved by the Environment Agency.  These will be kept in Cleaning Services for a minimum period of 3 years.

C5 - Risk assessment
>> Ensure a risk assessment has been carried out for the disposal of healthcare waste

Technical Services Manager

>> Disposal of healthcare waste must be included in the risk assessment pertaining to the procedures
>> Assessments will be reviewed regularly and when a significant change has occurred
>> Assessments are to be kept for a minimum of three years after the procedures covered in the assessment has ceased
>> Assessments will be available to those associated with the procedures associated with healthcare waste production, collection and disposal
   
C6 - Exposure and health surveillance
>> Any injury resulting from exposure to healthcare waste must be reported to the University. Health surveillance may be offered as a result of any injury

>> Any medical information relating to individuals will be kept confidential
   
C7 - Health and safety assistance, competent people and supervision
>> Competent person must ensure clear information is provided that is suitable and sufficient to ensure the safe collection and disposal of healthcare waste

C8 - Design, commissioning and installation
>> The design of all bin stores must meet statutory requirements and must not pose any risk of harm to the individuals accessing the bins

>> Secure bin stores will be maintained by the University
>> Departments must provide suitable trolleys for the transport of healthcare waste while on site
>> Departments must provide yellow/orange as appropriate to the waste stream bags which must be a minimum of 500G. If not two bags should be used - see the guidance for more information
>> Departments must provide nylon cable ties to seal the bags. Your department’s colour, see page 3 of the guidance
   
C11 - Personal protective equipment
>> PPE identified as required by a risk assessment will be provided

>> PPE will be kept in good condition, and where necessary maintained (records of maintenance must be kept)
>> When PPE has been supplied it must be used in an appropriate manner

>> Cooperation, communication, coordination between all parties involved with the production and disposal of healthcare waste will be maintained

>> An emergency plan, when identified in the risk assessment, will be implemented

>> Waste disposal to be carried out in compliance with the guidance issued by cleaning services and health and safety services

C15 - Security and safekeeping
>> All healthcare waste stores and bins are to be kept locked at all times

>> Hazardous substances must be assessed in accordance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations
