  Pulsed Doppler radar
  • The pulsed-Doppler radar system used in this project was constructed by INW [ link ] and has been tested at a number of locations by AIATR [ link ].
  • The basic design elements of this radar can be seen in this sketch diagram:

  • xxxxxxDoppler radar design

    xxxxxxDoppler radar design.

  • The use of a dual-frequency radar system (5.8 GHz and 35.8 GHz) gives us the possibility of simulataneously investigating the properties of the dense and powder parts of the snow avalanche:

  • xxxxxx5.8 GHz radar system for dense part investigation

xxxxxx5.8 GHz radar system for dense part investigation.

xxxxxx35.8 GHz radar system for powder part investigation

xxxxxx35.8 GHz radar system for powder part investigation.

  • The radar measures the Doppler shift between the transmitted and received radar signals over range gates with a size of 50m:

  • xxxxxxDoppler shift measurements

    xxxxxxDoppler shift measurements.

  • The radar in use at the Himmeleck avalanche site (Alpe Rauz):

  • xxxxxxHimmeleck avalanche site radar

    xxxxxxHimmeleck avalanche site radar.

  • The radar installed in a concrete observation bunker at an avalanche test-site in Switzerland:

  • xxxxxxSwiss radar observation bunker

    xxxxxxSwiss radar observation bunker.

  • Using this equipment it is possible to produce a diagram showing the maximum avalanche velocity over time and space:

  • xxxxxxMaximum velocity diagram
