I am an avid traveller, and was looking for a way to combine my study with my love of exploring. I am happy that I stumbled across the Leeds International Summer School (LISS) programme, as it does just that. Not only are the courses exciting and diverse, but the social programmes organised by LISS allowed me to travel all around Northern England.

At my home university, I study languages and linguistics, so I was seeking a completely different experience of education that I would not normally receive in Australia. That is why I chose the modules ‘Witches, Heretics, and Conspirators’, and ‘The English Country House’. Both of my lecturers were enthusiastic, intelligent, encouraging, and humorous. It made every class enjoyable, and every field trip exceptional. On the field trips, I was able to visit Harewood House, Temple Newsam, Castle Howard, and Pendle Hill. I felt spoilt by these opportunities that were provided to me, and I won’t lie, I definitely liked to imagine myself living in such a grand place as Castle Howard!

The LISS social assistants did a great job of organising activities throughout the week and on our weekends. We travelled to York, Whitby, Ilkley, Malham Cove, and Cambridge to name a few. We sang karaoke, danced salsa, explored the local areas and parks, and ate ourselves silly on traditional Sunday roasts and English afternoon teas. All the while I was forging deep and long lasting friendships with people from all corners of the world. Networking with such incredible, like-minded students allowed me to further my intercultural awareness and expand on my communication skillset, all of which is highly valued by future employers.

I would advise any future students that are considering LISS to jump at the chance. The programme is so smoothly run that I was never at a loss for things to do, and there was always someone to turn to if I had a question to ask. After a quick four weeks, I have friends for life, new memories to hold close, and a diverse education to add to my resume. There is a whole world out there to explore, and LISS is a fantastic way to get started!
