Academic staff in the School pursue an extensive and varied range of individual and collaborative research.

Key research themes include European literatures, cultures and societies from the medieval age via the Renaissance to the 21 st Century; the Arab world; contemporary China, Japan and the cultures and societies of South East Asia; gender; the media, especially film; translation and interpreting; language branding, demography, immigration and race; postcolonialism; diasporic cultures; language, linguistics and computing. Research links extend worldwide to include institutions from Hong Kong to Sweden, from Paris to Canada and from the USA to Japan.

Research at postgraduate level can be

  • an MA by Research: a 1-year (full time) or 2-year (part time) programme of supervised research into a subject of your choice, supported by research training; or
  • a PhD: a 3-year (full time) or longer (part time) programme of supervised and supported research leading to a doctorate

The School registers approximately 70 research postgraduates each year, typically about half are international students.

Research Postgraduate Study

For PhD study, a good Master’s degree is usually required. You will find specific information about research study and other more practical matters on the relevant Centre/Departmental web pages.

Before a formal application can be made, we normally require a CV and a research proposal. In some cases, however (e.g. where you have already identified a specific member of staff whom you wish to supervise your research), you may first make an informal enquiry to the member of staff concerned. But, in all cases, a formal research proposal must be submitted before a decision about the application can be made.
