The University of Leeds won the 2006 Varsity blue riband event, the Men’s Rugby Union match, held at Headingley Carnegie Stadium. 4,400 spectators witnessed a superb display from the team as they battled against an extremely strong Leeds Met Carnegie outfit.
It was an important victory for the University of Leeds who have worked hard at developing a partnership with Leeds Tykes and Otley RFC in the past year.
Stewart Ross, Director of Sport for University of Leeds said, “I am delighted with the performance of our rugby players in the final match of the varsity and in front of such a large crowd.
Rugby Union is the first sport at the University to undergo a strategic review and victory in this sport at Varsity demonstrates the positive steps taken towards performance sport.”
Ross added, “I am very proud of the spirit and competitive nature of all of our performances. Varsity is a useful competition for preparing our teams for the start of the BUSA competition. We hope that in 2007 we will be able to replicate the Rugby Union success in many other sports.”
Other winning teams from the day were men’s hockey, netball, men’s volleyball and men’s badminton. The overall competition was won by Leeds Met for the second year.
