Use of dictionaries in exams
All students may use a simple language translation dictionary from their own language to English and vice versa during an examination, unless prohibited in the rubric of the paper. You may only use a dictionary permitted by Student Services and those allowed for this purpose are detailed below.
If you wish to use a dictionary during your University examinations, you must:
- Check the list of dictionaries approved for use in University examinations below.
- Obtain the relevant dictionary; if no appropriate dictionary is listed below you should go to the Student Services Centre to seek further advice.
- Check if the use of dictionaries is permitted in your examinations. Speak with the module leader for each examination you need to take. It is your responsibility to know prior to the start of the examinations.
- Check the rubric of the examination paper to ensure use of dictionaries is permitted. If the school excludes the use of dictionaries during a particular examination it will be explained in the rubric of the examination paper.
- Any dictionary which is not shown on the approved list below or which is not presented to the Student Services Centre Counter for an approval stamp will be confiscated from the student in the examination. No approval - no permission to use.
The condition of the dictionary is the responsibility of the user. Annotations of any kind are not permitted. Should any annotations be identified, the user of the dictionary will be reported for cheating. To claim the dictionary is borrowed or second hand will not be an acceptable reason for defence.
If you would like to see examples of publications which have been approved for use, these can be located at the Student Services Centre Counter. Please note, if you fail to bring your own dictionary to an examination, we DO NOT supply dictionaries.
