Leeds University Staff Walking Club

Organisation

Each weekend there usually is at least one LUWC walk, sometimes two. These fall into two categories: the alternating Saturday and Sunday walks are of reasonable length (9-16m.), while the ‘B walks’, held every 2-3 weeks, are gentler, averaging around 6-7 unhurried miles. All our walks are day walks, graded 1-5 according to strenuousness, so you can have some idea of what to expect. (1= very gentle, 5= very strenuous)

As well as the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District and the North York Moors, we regularly visit the Bowland Fells and the Lake District. In addition, we hold several walking weekends each year in beautiful places. Over recent years, these have included weekends based on Derwentwater, Swaledale, the Ogwen Valley and Dovedale, as well as long weekends on the Glyndwr Way, the Cleveland Way and the Hadrian’s Wall Path. In addition, we normally organise a walking holiday each summer. These have included a circuit of Mont Blanc (TMB), the Pennine Way, the Bernese Oberland , the West Highland Way, the Hardangervidda plateau (Norway) and sections of the Pembrokeshire and SW Coast Paths. In 2009 we were based on Trins (Austria). Our next trip is based on Francaviila, Sicily.

There is no subscription. The only expense incurred (apart from investing in a reasonable pair of boots!), is that of transport to and from the walk. We encourage the use of public transport and, for linear walks, this is normally unavoidable. Where cars are used, we ask participants to share vehicles as far as is possible, and to share fuel costs [guide price 25p per mile].

Our leaders are very experienced walkers who know the area well and will have checked the route of their walk shortly beforehand. For each walk (see ‘Current Programme’), the name and contact details of the leader are given, as well as a brief description of the walk and details of where to meet.

To join a walk, simply contact the leader a day or so beforehand: this is so he/she can know how many participants to expect and can coordinate transport accordingly.
