SUNDAY 1 JANUARY: BRAMHOPE TUNNEL WALK (7 miles) Description: Grade 2. A gentle walk to greet the New Year. A truncated version of a familiar circuit, in recognition of the date. Featuring Golden Acre Park, a donkey sanctuary, a vast quarry, a puritan chapel, a spectacular descent, an elaborate tunnel portal,Meet: 10.00, Golden Acre Park main car park.Leader: David Shaw (h-2857480; m-0787 567 9350 – on the day). |
SATURDAY 7 JANUARY: ERRATIC PROGRESS (5.5miles) Description: B WALK Fields, moorland and lanes (with a fair few stiles) to world-famous Norber Erratics and Nappa Scar — grey boulders perch on limestone plinths, dumped there by the glacial retreat. Then across Austwick Beck to hamlet of Wharfe, returning along remains of monastic sheepways linked to the likes of Fountains Abbey. Stalagmites and stalactites are still being formed under your feet, apparently. TMeet: CANCELLEDDirections: Take A65. About 2.5 miles beyond Settle turn R for Austwick. SUNDAY 8 JANUARY: STOODLEY PIKE AND THE ROCHDALE CANAL (9 miles) Description: Grade 2/3 A gentle climb to a famous Calderdale landmark, giving splendid views in all directions. We then follow the ridge and descend to the hamlets of Mankinholes and Lumbutts, before returning to Hebden Bridge via the Rochdale canal tow path. SATURDAY 14 JANUARY: A SEDUCING FAIRY AND A ROMAN CAMP (10 miles). Description: Grade 3. Some of the classic bits round Malham linked by an ancient green lane.One seriously up hill bit on the road.Meet: Check time. Public Car Park MalhamDirections: A65, turn right on entering Gargrave and then north, following the signs, to Malham. The large p&d car park is on the left as you enter the village. SUNDAY 15 JANUARY: FEWSTON & TIMBLE INGS WOODS (6.2miles) Description: B WALK Through woods and fields in the stunning Washburn valley above Swinsty and Fewston reservoirs.Meet: 10.30 Swinsty Moor car park at S end of dam between the two reservoirs (GR 185 538. OS map Explorer 297 ex-27)Directions: A660 to Otley town centre. Cross river and take B6451 (towards Pateley Bridge), after approx 6 miles turn L to Fewston, continue across dam. SUNDAY 22 JANUARY: COLDSTONES CUT & ASHFOLD SIDE BECK (9.5 miles) Description: Grade 2. A gentle stroll in Mid-Nidderdale, offering many contrasts. A rising track past many farms, Yorkshires biggest public artwork, a rugged disused mine, the timeless beauty of Ashfold Side Beck, a glimpse of Gouthwaite Reservoir, a country pub and an easy riverside path back to the teashops of Pateley Bridge. (PT)Meet: 09.30, Pateley Bridge,Directions: A660 Otley centre; cross the Wharfe and turn R on B6451; proceed via Farnley, cross the A59 and continue, via Dacre Banks, to Summer Bridge. Turn L here, on the B6165, and soon drop down into Pateley Bridge. SATURDAY 28 JANUARY: . FLASBY FELL (9 miles) Description: Grade 2-3. This short day out with 1400ft of ascent for a mid winter’s walk from Skipton starts with a steady climb out of the town, a thrilling dash across the by-pass to a golf course before the ascent of Sharp Haw and Rough Haw. The return leg gives us the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Flasby Hall before ascending towards White Rock and Crag Wood with excellent views towards the south and west. The approach to Skipton is then via Tarn House. TMeet: 9.30 On the pavement outside the Church at the top of Skipton High Street.Directions: A660/A65 to Skipton. Turn L on the A65/A59 bypass. At the second roundabout, exit first L (B6265) downhill into Skipton. At the bottom of the hill as you approach the bridge, turn R The car park will be on L a short distance along. SATURDAY 28 JANUARY: RAWDON BILLINGS & CRAGG WOOD (4.5 miles) Description: B WALK A seasonal amble close to home, threading ginnels and traversing fields and woods around Rawdon overlooking the Aire valley. Those who want to might finish with a pub lunch.Meet: 10.30, Rawdon public library and old Town Hall car parkDirections: Take A65 (the Guiseley road) and follow to junction with A658 Bradford – Harrogate road. The library is immediately after the lights, on L, fronted by a rank of extra-large recyling bins. SUNDAY 5 FEBRUARY: CASTLEFORD TO WAKEFIELD (10 miles) Description: Grade 2 An interesting post-industrial walk along the Calder Navigation. We start at the new bridge in Castleford and visit the confluence of the Calder and Aire. We then walk down the Navigation: rural scenes, sand extraction, feats of nineteenth-century engineering, post- industrial devastation and a medieval chantry. We end up at the Hepworth Museum in Wakefield for tea + culture. Return by train from Wakefield. T.Meet: On the platform at Leeds station, having bought a single ticket to Castleford, in good time for the 09.34 to Knottingley (NB Those ineligible for metro concessions may find a train/bus Day Rover best value).Leader: Priscilla Truss. SATURDAY 11 FEBRUARY: AN EMBSAY CIRCUIT (9 miles) Description: Grade 2/3. A 170m ascent of Embsay Crag should allow panoramicMeet: Check time with Leader. Embsay Reservoir car parkDirections: A65 from Leeds towards Skipton. After the A59 junction first left A6131 then after half a mile or so right to Embsay. At the top of the village T junction, left. SATURDAY 11 FEBRUARY: MIDDLE NIDDERDALE (6 miles) Description: B WALK Field paths (may be muddy) to Wath and Gouthwaite reservoir, then steepish climb to picturesque return track with views over the dale.Meet: 10.30 Pateley Bridge in the p&d car park across the bridge on L (assuming you’re coming from the east)Directions: A660 to Otley. SUNDAY 19 FEBRUARY: WOODHOUSE MOOR TO HAREWOOD (10 miles) Description: Grade 2. A linear walk from central Leeds to mid-Wharfedale, with hardly a street on the way. Charming old ginnels, the delightful wooded corridor of Meanwood Valley and The Hollies, then Eccup Reservoir and the well-manicured open spaces of Harewood Park. Return by bus from Harewood to Eastgate. Follow signs from main roundabout to Hebden Bridge on A646. Go through Hebden and follow signs up the hill to Heptonstall. SUNDAY 4 MARCH: THORPE, BARDEN MOOR, RYLSTONE (12 miles) Description: Grade 3. Up through Thorpe to the plateau of Barden Moor (a short but straightforward trackless section), then curve round the edge of moor (fine views north) past the memorial and Rylstone cross, and drop to Rylstone. SATURDAY 17 MARCH: FAIRBURN INGS & LEDSHAM (5miles) Description: B WALK A tranquil ramble through the RSPB bird sanctuary and visitor centre, passing through the landscapes of the Kingdom of Elmet. Easy paths and stiles – nothing steep. Binoculars useful.Meet: 10.30 Cut Road, Fairburn. ( SE 472 278. OS map 289 Leeds).Directions: Take A63 (Selby road). SUNDAY 18 MARCH: THE BACK SIDE OF BACK TOR. (11 miles). Description: Grade 3 .Ancient tracks through heather, woodland and pasture and (of course) the highest part of Derwent Edge.Meet: Check time with Leader. Park at the roadside at GR 225909.Directions: M1 to junction 36; then A61 towards Sheffield. At the first roundabout take A616 and stick to the speed limit: the local cameras are always on. After about 7 miles turn L into Midhopestones. Follow this undulating road for about 5 miles. to the starting point. SATURDAY 24 MARCH: RIPLEY, SAWLEY & BISHOP THORNTON (10 miles) Description: Grade 1/2. Field and woodland paths and tracks in lower Nidderdale.Meet: 09.30 Ripley.Directions: A61 through Harrogate towards Ripon. SUNDAY 1 APRIL: GARSDALE HEAD AND HELLGILL (8 miles ) Description: Grade 2/3. A walk across the bleak moorlands around Garsdale and Upper Wensleydale. Starting at Garsdale Station, we cross Grisedale Common, then descend into Upper Wensleydale. Crossing the Settle-Carlisle railway at Aisgill Summit we continue to Hellgill Force, on the River Eden, where there are good views over Mallerstang Common to Wild Boar Fell. After Hell Gill Bridge, we follow the ancient High Way, past Lunds Chapel across the River Ure and back to Garsdale.Meet: 8.45 Leeds Station to catch the 09.00 train to Garsdale. If coming by car, meet at Garsdale station at 10.45. Return trains are at 15.00 and 17.47, arriving 16.34 and 19.21 respectively.Directions: If coming by car, come N on the A1 and turn off on A684 to Garsdale on the Sedbergh Road. SUNDAY 29 APRIL: FIRTH FELL AND BIRK’S TARN (11.5 miles) Description: Grade 3. A walk mostly on minor paths with a little yomping. From Kettlewell, up the ridge to the summit of Firth Fel, then on to Birk’s Tarn. Return to Kettlewell inside the “right to roam” area on the north side of Firth Fell with spectacular views of Wharfedale.
