Andrew Blance BSc (Hons) MSc
Short Course Lecturer in Biostatistics, University of Leeds.
Background
Mr Blance graduated in 2000 from the University of Liverpool, where he read Mathematics. Pursuing an interest in the application of statistics within the clinical domain, Mr Blance studied for an MSc in Medical Statistics at Lancaster University. After graduating in 2001, Mr Blance briefly worked as a Medical Statistician for the Welsh Cancer Intelligence and Surveillance Unit in Cardiff. In 2002, stimulated by a desire to help disseminate understanding of medical statistics and by the challenge posed by particular (novel) scenarios in oral health research, Mr Blance took an appointment at the University of Leeds. The role of Lecturer in Medical Statistics was a joint appointment between the Biostatistics Unit and Leeds Dental Institute. Key initiatives within this post were to contribute to research output through the correct implementation and development of statistical methodology, and to maintain and develop relevant and effective medical statistics teaching, within the field of dentistry.
Current Appointment
Since September 2008, Mr Blance is the principal lecturer of Statistical Thinking. Seeking to utilise and expand his vast experience of effectively teaching medical statistics to a clinical audience, Mr Blance is aiming to establish a comprehensive programme of short courses in Medical Statistics, specifically targeted to the needs of non-statisticians working in the field of health care and/or health research.
Research Interests
Mr Blance has a history of ongoing collaborations with both Division of Biostatistics and Leeds Dental Institute colleagues, including both methodological and clinical research. Primary research interests centre on the assessment of agreement and the methodology of multilevel modelling. Mr Blance has presented his research at numerous statistical and dental international conferences.
