Introduction for 2005-06

Welcome to the website for the Taught Students Handbook of Rules, Regulations and Procedures. This is designed to be a 'one stop shop' where you can get the University's official 'rules' and procedures that, together with the University's Student Charter*, make up the core of the contract between the University and its students.

Other elements of the contract include programme and module specifications together with the information, rules and requirements from your parent and teaching Schools and any of the University Services you use.

It is the responsibility of each individual student to be familiar with the content, and to know how to access the detail, of the University's rules, regulations, procedures and codes. Students can seek any advice and guidance they need from their parent School or Faculty.

New students should immediately familiarise themselves with this Handbook's contents as it gives the information/requirements they will need should they ever have any uncertainty about:

  • what they are required to do;

  • the University's regulations they should meet;

  • the procedures they need to follow;

  • the University's 'Codes' and 'Rules' relating to all forms of academic and non-academic activity and the procedures the University follows in cases where a student's behaviour suggests (s)he has not behaved in accordance with these Codes or Rules.

Returning students should, in particular, check out the procedures and general requirements at the start of each session. For session 2005-06 the Handbook, as published on this website, applies in full to all students who commenced their studies in or after September 2003. The majority of the Handbook - including the Rules for Award - applies to students who commenced their studies before September 2003. The only section which does not apply is the curricular Ordinance and Regulations - the version of which governing studies commenced before 2003 is available at: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/students/office/ordreg0203.doc . First degree and other undergraduate students who started before 2003 are particularly asked to note that the principles and requirements of the Rules for Award section of the 2005-06 Handbook applies to them albeit that terminology in these rules relates directly to the 2003 version of the curricular Ordinances and Regulations.

The academic requirements given in the Ordinances and Regulations governing the University's awards are not expected to change in any significant manner during a student's career if it is completed in the expected 'normal' duration.

Other Codes and Rules may change from time to time to ensure they reflect changes in national legislation and best practice. The current version of all these rules and regulations can be accessed through this website.

Any student finding him/herself subject to any of the University's special procedures - covering, for example, unsatisfactory students, discipline, cheating, plagiarism, fraud, falsification, fabrication or other forms of academic malpractice - should certainly check in this Handbook so they understand what these procedures are.

Checking the relevant University Codes when you start your studies will, of course, ensure you know what the University expects of you and what you can expect from the University - so that you can, like the vast majority of students, avoid being subject to these special procedures.

The University communicates with its registered students in a number of different ways - including by e-mail to students' personal mailboxes on the University's own e-mail servers. All students accordingly need to check frequently the e-mails sent to their own personal e-mail address, the details of which they receive on first registration. Not using your University e-mail is not a defence against not knowing something important.

We aim to make this Handbook as clear as possible and accordingly welcome any comments on how it might be improved. If you have any comments or suggestions please send them to Janet Jurica in the University's Secretariat.

* The Student Charter is being reviewed during session 2005-06.
