1. What Financial Support is available?

Students at Leeds starting a PGCE course in September 2011 may be eligible for the following financial support:

a) Government Loans and Grants

These are applied for, assessed and paid by the Student Loans Company via Student Finance England. The Maintenance Grant does not need to be repaid whilst the loans are only repaid after you have finished your course and are earning over £15000.

Maintenance Grant

A non repayable Maintenance Grant of up to £2906.00. How much you receive will depend upon the level of your household income as assessed by the Student Loans Company.

Maintenance Loan

A repayable loan to help with basic living costs of up to £4950.00. All eligible students can receive 72% of their maximum loan entitlement regardless of household income. The remaining 28% depends on your household income.

Tuition Fee Loan

A repayable Tuition Fee Loan of up to the full cost of the course, which for 2011/12 is £3375.00.

Further information can be found at: www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

b) Leeds Bursaries

PGCE home rated students are eligible to receive a Leeds bursary if the household income assessed by the Student Loan Company is under £36,600.

PGCE students taking Physics; Chemistry; Mathematics; Biology or Modern Foreign Languages will receive a £338.00 Leeds Bursary providing their household income is less than £36,600. The Bursary is paid as a lump sum in January 2012.

Primary PGCE and Secondary English students will qualify for the standard Leeds Bursary package. The amount of Leeds Bursary you’ll receive depends on your household income. The bursary is paid as two equal instalments in January 2012 and April 2012.

c) TDA (Training Development Agency) Training Bursary

Students starting a Full Time PGCE course in 2011/12 will receive a training bursary if undertaking the following subjects

Subject

Physics

Chemistry

Mathematics

Biology

Modern Foreign Languages

Amount

£9,000

£6,000

The TDA bursary will be paid over the nine eligible training months, October 2011 to June 2012 inclusive.

Students undertaking the Primary PGCE or Secondary English PGCE are not eligible to receive a TDA Bursary in 2011/12.

Further information can be found at: www.tda.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/funding/training-in-england

Information relating to the payment of the TDA Training Bursary will be sent out to eligible candidates in May 2011.

d) Other Funding...

Access to Learning Fund

The Access to Learning Fund is there to help you meet extra, unexpected costs that cannot be met from other sources of income. Any help you receive from the fund is usually non-repayable. Students are assessed on their individual needs.

Further information can be found at: www.leeds.ac.uk/financialaid/alf

Professional and Career Development Loan

A Professional and Career Development Loan can help you pay for learning that enhances your job skills or career prospects. It’s a bank loan, so you’ll have to pay it back once you’ve left your course. However, you don’t pay interest for the period when you’re in learning.

2. Paying your Tuition Fees at Leeds

If you don’t wish to apply for a Tuition Fee Loan you will be classed as a Self Funding Student and must pay the tuition fee direct to the University. The University of Leeds operates an instalment scheme for self funding students whereby students are required to make at least a 50% payment before or at the time of registering and make arrangements for the balance of the tuition fees to be paid on the 10th February 2012 by direct debit from a UK bank account. You can make an online payment through the Account Receivable team or phone them directly on 0113 343 1830/5798.

3. Students with a Student Support Number (SSN)

Any student wishing to register at the University of Leeds who has funding from the SLC will need their Student Support Number. The SSN is a unique number given to each student once their application has been processed. Usually the SLC notify the University of the SSN electronically before registration. Students who have a SSN can complete online registration. Most students will already know their SSN from previous study – however you must complete the Tuition Fee Loan application process for 2011/12 otherwise you will be personally liable for the payment of your 2011/12 tuition fee debt.

If at the time of registration you don’t have a SSN and are expecting the SLC to provide funding you will not be allowed to fully register.

Note, for most students the SLC will have provided the SSN electronically to the University of Leeds and it will therefore already be in place on your University student account, however, problems can occur when an application is still being processed by the SLC or if the application is submitted late. Usually the situation can be resolved quickly and the SLC will inform the University of the SSN automatically.

If you experience difficulty with registration and believe it is because your SSN is not showing on your University of Leeds student record, please contact the Registration helpline on telephone no. 0800 9150402 (within the UK) +44 (0)113 3437000 (outside the UK) or email registration@leeds.ac.uk - Please have your SSN ready to quote to the officer.

In a few cases students are unable to obtain their SSN in time for the registration event. If this applies to you, please contact the Registration helpline as above. You may be able to get ‘deferred registration’ status for a limited period of time in which you will be expected to organise your grant or loan application. Alternatively if you wish to register without a SSN then you will be treated as a self funding student. Please refer to section entitled ‘Self Funding Students’.
