Module Selection

  • When applying to Leeds, it is important that you set aside some time to carefully choose the right modules for you.
  • The modules selected at application stage are considered to be your first choice therefore a place will be allocated for you if you are accepted and you will be enrolled on the particular module.
  • It can be complicated and time consuming to make changes at a later date so by getting this right first time you will save a lot of energy at later stages. The steps below offer guidance which you should follow carefully.
  • You should also read the following document before you select the modules as this outlines the departments and schools which impose restrictions on modules taken by incoming Study Abroad students

Module changes

1. Steps to selecting modules at the University of Leeds

Step 1.1

Approval
  • Ask your home university if they have any restrictions on the modules you can study at the University of Leeds.

Step 1.2

Departmental specifics

  • Carefully read the Departmental Guidance on Module Selection  which outlines the departments and schools which impose restrictions on modules taken by Study Abroad students
  • In particular the schools of Design, English and Psychology have strict restrictions

Step 1.3

Research the Module Catalogue

  • Research the modules you wish to take within the Module Catalogue
  • If you are applying for the first semester or the full academic year you will need to select modules from the most recent module catalogue.

Please take into account the following points:

Use the search criteria for Study Abroad students

A full list of modules available can be accessed from the Module Catalogue by using the search parameter ‘search by Incoming Study Abroad’. Ensure you use the tick-box ‘search by isa’

Select modules which are taught in the semester you intend to study in Leeds

‘Taught Semester 1&2’: These modules are taught from September – June so are unavailable to students applying for one semester only.

‘Taught Semester 1; Semester 2’: These modules are taught from September – January and again from January – June.

‘Taught Semester 1’: These modules are taught from September – January.

‘Taught Semester 2’: These modules are taught from January – June.

Select modules taught at the appropriate level

The four letter code at the beginning identifies the teaching school (e.g. MECH2410). The first digit of the numerical code shows the intellectual/cognitive level of the module. Level 1 modules will start with a number one, and so forth.

Please make sure that the module is at an appropriate academic level. Guidance should be sought from your Home University tutor if you are not sure.

•  Level 1 modules are generally suitable for students who have not previously studied the subject at their home university.
•  Level 2 modules are generally suitable for students who have previously studied the subject at their home university to an intermediate level.
•  Level 3 modules are suitable for students who have previously studied the subject at their home university to the same level as a graduate.

Number of credits

You will need to follow 60 credits per semester so you are advised to select up to 80 credits per semester at application stage.

If you intend to apply to Leeds for the full academic year you should select modules for both semesters.

The more schools you take modules in, the more chance there will be timetable clashes. You should not select modules in more than four teaching schools

ERASMUS students

European students applying via the ERASMUS programme are expected to take the majority of their modules within their parent school (this is the school your home university has its Erasmus link with).

Erasmus students wishing to take modules in the School of English should read 'Guidelines for Incoming Erasmus Students wishing to take modules in the School of English' available in the Downloads section of this website.

January – January students

If you are planning to apply to Leeds from January to January your stay will cross over two academic years in the UK. You should therefore only select modules at application stage for the January to June semester (i.e. Semester 2 at Leeds). You will be advised of how and when to select modules for the September to January semester half way through your first semester in Leeds.

Pre requisites

Ensure you check the pre-requisite qualifications outlined within the module description for each module. Where the pre-requisite qualification is shown as another Leeds module, Study Abroad/ Exchange students are not expected to have studied this exact module. However they are expected to a have studied and passed a similar

Postgraduate modules

The majority of students applying to Leeds as an exchange or Study Abroad student take undergraduate modules.  However it is sometimes possible for suitably qualified students to study one or more postgraduate modules. You should be aware that if you accepted for post-graduate modules you will not receive your final transcripts until the November after you have concluded your studies in Leeds. Please note the following academic Schools and Departments do not allow Study Abroad & Exchange students to take PG modules: The Business School, Civil Engineering, Colour Chemistry, Design, East Asian Studies, Education, English, Health Care, History, Linguistics, Medical Physics, Politics and International Studies and Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies.

Step 1.4

Complete your Application

Complete the online application form (see the application overview web page for further information) remembering to refer to the information provided above and within the Departmental Guidance on Module Selection

2. Sending your Application Summary to the University of Leeds (see the application overview page for further detail)

Step 2.1

If you decide to select modules totalling more than 80 credits per semester on your online application, please number them in order of preference on your application summary, before sending it to the University of Leeds. The Study Abroad Office will not be able to process your application until we have this information.

3. Processing your module choices

Step 3.1

Module Choices will be processed after May 1st when the Module Catalogue for the following academic year is activated. Shortly after this date (if you have applied earlier than May 1st) or as soon as your application paperwork arrives at the University the Study Abroad Office will send your complete application to the academic schools and departments where you have chosen modules.

As soon as schools have made a decision on all modules the Study Abroad Office will confirm your Programme of Study by email. If you are required to select additional or drop modules you will be notified at this stage (see step 4 below). Please be patient as module confirmation can take a number of weeks.

Students who apply to Leeds before May (for September start) won’t have their programme of study confirmed until a few weeks after the Module Catalogue is activated. If any of your original choices are found to have been discontinued for the following academic year you will be contacted in May asking you to reselect additional modules.

4. Module changes

Step 4.1

Module changes should be approved by your home university and it is your responsibility to get this approval.

Changing your module choices due to unavailability

Shortly after your module choices are activated you will be contacted by email if you have chosen any modules which have been discontinued or are full. You will be asked to reselect additional modules as soon as possible.

Changing your module choices due to rejection

If you are not accepted for your original module choices and you do not have 60 credits per semester then the Study Abroad Office will contact you by email and ask you to select additional modules. The Study Abroad Office will assist with your second round of module choices until you have the recommended 60 credits per semester.

If you wish to make changes to your finalised Programme of Study

If you wish to change modules after you have been accepted for a full workload it will be your responsibility to contact teaching departments and schools directly. You can download a current list of ‘Study Abroad’ contacts in the schools and departments from the Downloads page.

Unfortunately the Study Abroad Office is not able to assist with module changes after your Programme of Study has been confirmed.
