Sarah Ansari's current research focuses on the interplay between society and the everyday state in the Pakistani province of Sindh during years following independence in 1947.

It is particularly concerned with how the local state handled and sought to resolve the day-to-day concerns of its new citizens, the changing expectations of these ordinary Pakistanis themselves, and the ways in which notions of citizenship more generally evolved during Pakistan’s early, formative, decades.
