Since it was established in 1996, the Leeds
Omani Society (LOS) has been the
gathering foundation for the Omani
students in Leeds. The society
essentially aims at organizing social,
cultural and sports activities for its
members as well as promoting the Omani
culture in Leeds. It significantly
contributes in helping new Omani
students to settle in Leeds and succeed
in their studies.
Activity types
Each year, various major activities are
held, among these are the weekly Ramadan
Iftar Meetings, Eid gatherings, the
Omani National Day celebration, the
Annual Omani cultural exhibition, the
weekly Friday circles, football
leagues and end of year parties. The
society has continuously participated in
many events organized by other societies
either in Leeds or around the UK.
Joining the society
All Omani students who come to study in
Leeds are welcome to become members of
the society. They only need to send
their email addresses to the society so
they can be updated regularly with
various events and activities. Omani
students who study in areas close to
Leeds may also join the society and
participate in the various activities.
Current records (as of 01.05.08) show
that there are 75 male and female
members. This figure is regularly
updated when some students finish their
studies or new students join.
Forming the administration
At the beginning of every academic year,
a general meeting is usually held for
all Omani students in Leeds. This
meeting marks the start of the society's
activities in which a new administration
is formed. All Omani students can put
themselves forward for any position
(president, vice-president, treasurer,
secretary, sports leader and cultural
leader).
