Rally
There will be a regional rally and demonstration on Thursday 4 March both to
recognise the determination and strength of all members at Leeds and as part
of the national union’s ‘Defend jobs, defend education’ campaign.
The rally will start at 1pm in the Victoria Gardens, Leeds central. Speakers
include UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt and UCU President, Alastair Hunter
alongside Leeds UCU Officers and local MPs. Please make every effort to attend,
bring your colleagues, your friends and family.
Emergency General Meeting – will be held next Wednesday, 3rd March at 1pm in Roger Stevens LT25. More details will follow.
Next Local General Meeting - The next General Meeting for the University of Leeds UCU will be held on Thursday 25th March 2010 at 1pm in Chemistry Lecture Theatre B. Motions for debate at this meeting can be sent to Sue Redhead in the UCU office by email (s.j.redhead@leeds.ac.uk) or post to be received no later than noon on Friday 12th March.
Current Dispute
As a result of a proposal put by UCU negotiators to a General Meeting on 24th February, the strikes 25th Feb, 2nd March and 4th March have been called off and industrial action suspended for the time being. The full statement agreed between the University and UCU can be viewed here.
The University of Leeds has been asked by the Visitor of the university (Lord Mandelson in his capacity as Lord President of the Council) to put its cost cutting plans on hold while he investigates a formal challenge that accuses the university of breaking key rules on how it is regulated. Now that the Voluntary Leavers Scheme has been launched we know that this has raised many questions for our members. We have looked into this and done some digging, and this document (click to download) contains the information we have ascertained. Anyone considering pursuing an application needs to be aware that neither the University nor UCU can give advice. However, the university will be engaging independent financial advisers and consultations will be made available to staff.
We have produced 2 documents to try and answer questions members may have in relation to the forthcoming Industrial Action - one with general questions and one particularly relating to pensions.
