For Staff: Questionmark assessments in the VLE

Questionmark Perception is an online assessment, delivery and reporting tool. You can schedule and deliver Questionmark assessments to students via the VLE.

Note

To use this guide you should have already created your questions and assessment(s) on the staging server and transferred them to the live server to be scheduled. For further information on using Questionmark and how to get an account see the Questionmark support site

Existing users should also ensure that they have the latest version of authoring manager installed on their PC.

New method of scheduling assessments

The method of scheduling an assessment has changed. Previously when scheduling an assessment in the VLE you would navigate through an identical folder structure to that of the live Questionmark server. Questionmark have introduced a change which means you will no longer see a folder structure, instead every assessment on the live server (this includes yours and other users) is listed in name order from the dropdown list in the VLE.

The VLE Service are working on a custom fix for Leeds to restore the folder view in the VLE, meaning you will again see the folder structure and only have access to schedule the assessments you have authoring rights to.

See the casebook site for examples of use in learning & teaching at Leeds.

Help your students

Why not make life easier for your students by linking to the guide on accessing a Questionmark assessment. We have produced a series of ten tips to help improve your module, part of which has further advice on how you can aid students by providing instructions and links to further guides

Add a Questionmark assessment

  • Navigate to the appropriate area in your module/organisation e.g. Assessment.
  • Ensure that Edit Mode is switched ON from the top right of the screen, if it isn’t already.
  • Select the Add Assessment action link and click Questionmark Schedule.

Add a Questionmark Assessment from the Add Interactive Tool action link

Name & Description

  • Name - Enter a name for the assessment (this is required).
  • Schedule Description - You can enter any optional descriptive text. When scheduling an assessment with limited attempts, we recommend that you include a message similar to the following in this field:
"Please note that each time you view the assessment this will count as an attempt, even if no submission takes place.

Enter a name, description and Grade Centre details

Grade Centre

  • Store results in Grade Centre? - You can choose to have the results recorded in the Grade Centre.
  • Select result to display in Grade Centre - If you record the results in the Grade Centre they can be displayed by First, Best, Worst and Last
Note

Although the Grade Centre is configured to be updated with Questionmark assessment results, in rare situations network problems or other technical issues could mean that this update fails. Additionally, the marks in the Grade Centre are editable by staff with appropriate permissions, and so may not be representative of the student's mark at the time of submission.

We recommend that you request a Questionmark report once the assessment period has ended, see the FAQs tab for more information.

Select the assessment

  • Assessment Name - From the dropdown list select the assessment you want to schedule.

Select the assessment from the dropdown list

Limit attempts & set the access period

Tip

We recommend that you don't limit the number of attempts. Any time a student opens the assessment will count as an attempt, therefore if they open then close the assessment without completing it or if any technical problems occur, that will count as an attempt.

Questionmark records every submission a student makes to an assessment, so if a student has taken the same assessment more than once this will be recorded along with the time and date in a report. See the FAQs tab for details of how to request a report.

  • Limit Attempts - Restrict the number of attempts each student has to the assessment.*
  • Create schedule for each group participant? - If you limit the number of attempts this is automatically selected. There is no need to select this option if you don't want to limit the number of attempts.
Note*

If you choose not to limit the number of attempts you will not be able to limit then limit them at a later point by modifying an existing schedule. If you wish to limit attempts you must reschedule the assessment.

Limit the number of assessment attempts each student has

  • Set access period? - You can choose make the assessment available from and to a specific date and time.
  • Permit Users to View this Content - You can make the content assessment available immediately, or select No if you wish to work on the it and release it at a later date.
Additional Attempts

Limiting the number of attempts will also make it complicated to allow individual students access to additional attempts. It is only possible to reset the number of attempts for all students that are taking the assessment through the VLE.

You can give individual students access to additional attempts through the Questionmark Enterprise Manager by modifying the assessment schedule (you must log in using your Questionmark username and password not ISS).

To add the assessment click Submit, wait for the synchronisation process to complete, then select OK.

Accessing assessments

How do I test my summative assessment? / I can't click on the link in my content area

We recommend that you test summative assessments prior to the examination period in exam conditions e.g. a cluster using the secure browser. Test student accounts are available from your faculty/school contact, or if you don't have one please contact the ISS Helpdesk (details below).

You can also tryout a test yourself.* Navigate to the content area where the assessment has been added, make sure Edit Mode is OFF (if Edit Mode is ON you won't be able to click the link). Then select the assessment name.

Turn Edit Mode OFF to access the assesment from a content area

You will then be redirected to a new page, click Test assessment. Select test assessment

Note*

You should only use this method as a tryout, it doesn't replicate the conditions in which your students will access the assessment.

What will my students see?

Students can access assessments by selecting the name.

Click the assessment name

They will then be redirected to a page where they should select Take assessment.

Students will see the Take assessment link

How can I see all of the assessments that are deployed in my module/organisation?

From Module/Organisation Tools in the Control Panel select Questionmark, you will then see a list of schedules for that module/organisation.

Results

Although marks are passed to the Grade Centre, we strongly recommend that you request a report for all summative assessments. This is because the integration can occasionally fail and there are also some known issues.

By default we will send you a Names, Questions & Answers Excel report, further report types are listed in the reporting guide.

Please send the following details to the ISS Helpdesk:

  • The assessment name.
  • The dates between which the assessments were taken.
  • The type of report (if different to the default).
