As of 2001, there were an estimated 4.2 million CCTV cameras in the UK alone. They are everywhere – I'm sure we've all seen at least one today - but not all are watched constantly. An operator can often be charged with monitoring several cameras at once, which could mean that the onset of an important event could be missed. This project aims to assist CCTV operators by flagging potentially important changes of motion using a single camera in a world of unknown geometry.
Unfortunately though, the fear of a “Big Brother” state means that people often feel intimidated by CCTV and are worried about privacy. Therefore it is important to ensure that the methods used remain as anonymous as possible.
