Students on the Parkinson steps

Open days and visits

Before you apply to study with us we recommend that you attend one of our postgraduate open days. These take place several times a year and are a great opportunity to see the campus and speak with our staff and students. If you can't make it to any of the upcoming dates, please contact us to arrange an independent visit. You can find out when the next open day is here.

How to apply

You can apply for all of our postgraduate degrees online. You will be asked to create an account, allowing you to save your application and return to it at a later time, as well as track its progress once you have submitted it.

For our Masters courses you can follow the link on each course entry here.

For our research degrees you can find additional guidance and apply here.

Entry requirements

To apply for our Masters courses or an MA by Research, you'll need a bachelor degree (Class 2:1 or higher) in English literature or a related subject. To apply for a PhD we usually ask that you hold a Masters degree, as this helps you to develop the knowledge and skills you'll need for doctoral level research. However, if you can demonstrate excellent subject knowledge and a very clearly defined research proposal after completing your undergraduate studies this may be sufficient.

Mature students

We welcome applications from mature students, and accept a range of qualifications. If you don't currently meet the entry requirements for the course you wish to study, you may be able to enter through the Lifelong Learning Centre. Mature students, including those from disadvantaged or under-represented groups, can study many different full- and part-time courses including a foundation year leading into various arts and humanities undergraduate courses. You can find out more here.

Application deadlines

We accept applications for our Masters courses up until the date they start in September of each year. However, we recommend applying before the end of July in the year you want to begin your study, as if you apply later and some modules are already at maximum capacity you may not be able to study them.

There are no application deadlines for MA by Research or PhD degrees and you can begin your study at any time. However, most of our students on these courses start on 1st October each year so that they can benefit from the induction activities held at this time.

In addition, we recommend that you apply as early as possible to any of our postgraduate courses because:

  • You must submit your application for a place on your course before applying for scholarships or other funding.
  • You need to give yourself enough time to organise everything you will need to study with us here at Leeds, such as accommodation, visa applications, etc.
