As the largest French department in the UK, we offer MA by Research and PhD supervision across an exceptionally wide range of areas, including: literature from the medieval period to the present, contemporary French culture, film and visual cultures, francophone literature and politics, French politics and society, popular culture, modern French history, linguistics and translation studies. You will be supervised by a researcher who is working at the cutting edge of his or her field. For details of staff research specialisms, see the People section.
French Studies at Leeds offers a vibrant research community, with regular research seminars and workshops and collaboration with research centres within French, the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies and across the University of Leeds. We have excellent support for our postgraduates with the resources of the Brotherton Library (including early printed books, newspapers and periodicals) and the opportunities for dialogue and debate provided by the many seminars, workshops and conferences we organise.
We have international links with two partner universities in France: Université de Limoges and Université de Paris 8. As a research postgraduate, you will have the opportunity to undertake an exchange of 3 to 12 months at either university, as part of a postgraduate Erasmus exchange.
