Summary: Medieval European economic history, particularly international trade; England in the 13th and 14th centuries

Research interests

My research interests and publications have long focused on European trade and communication in the middle ages, and particularly in the overseas trade of England. In addition, I have a strong interest in English political history and chronicles of the fourteenth century.

Published work has covered

  • England's overseas markets, especially Spain and Iceland
  • England's trading commodities
  • Fourteenth century chronicles
  • The reign of Edward II

Work in progress includes volume 2 of the edition (with John Taylor and Leslie Watkiss) of Thomas Walsingham's Chronica majora; work on the shipping and shipmasters of medieval England; a monograph on England's overseas trade.

I am currently a member of the Council of the Royal Historical Society, Hon. Secretary of the journal Northern History and a member of the advisory committee on historic wrecks to the States of Guernsey.
