Overview

Research Interests

  • Philosophy in education, both in formal and informal education, specifically philosophy in schools, colleges, hospitals, prisons, workplaces, museums, galleries, community centres etc.
  • Philosophy of education, encompassing a range of issues

  • Normative ethics, in particular Neo Aristotelian accounts of virtue

  • Moral education in particular virtue theory accounts of moral education

  • Applied ethics including ethics of teaching and learning

  • Aesthetics, in particular theories of narrative in relation to ethics and education

  • Philosophy of mind and philosophy of action specifically in relation to moral education

Projects

Leeds Philosophy Exchange (link = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGYhFSIN9Ws) – a collaboration with Shire Oak Primary School in which students and teachers are trained and supported to run regular philosophy sessions for primary children. Leeds Philosophy Exchange’ projects has sister projects at the University of Bristol and the University of Oxford.

Philosophy in Schools with Students Conference (2015) A one-day conference exploring current philosophical enquiry practice in schools, along with the theory and research that underpins it attended by undergraduate and postgraduate students, teacher trainees, teachers, teaching assistants, lecturers, researchers as well as others with an interest in education and philosophy from across the UK and further afield. Ethics of Sport Project (2012) An collaboration with Dr Dave Lewis in which we produced case studies sand stimulus films for philosophical enquiry on the ethics of sport. (Link = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3H2wFvoKIw)

The Big Think Project (2008) A pilot philosophy programme for secondary school students at Abbey Grange High School
