Join us for an online talk with the Vice-Chancellor and the participants of the 100 Black Women Professors Now! Initiative.

Running from 2-3pm on Tuesday 24 May 2022, the event will celebrate the brilliant Black women within our University, while raising awareness of the challenges and barriers Black women face in pursuing academic careers.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simone Buitendijk, will provide an introduction to the event as well as talking to the participants about their experience of the programme.

It be co-hosted by the Deans for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Professor Iyiola Solanke and Professor Louise Bryant.

The Black Women Professors Now! Initiative was set-up by the Women’s Higher Education Network to address the lack of Black women in senior academic positions in universities across the UK. Six academics from the University of Leeds have participated in this year long pilot programme and will be discussing their experiences with the Vice-Chancellor.

Our 100 Black Women Professors Now! participants are:

  • Dr Taisir Elgorashi, Lecturer in Optical Networks, School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering
  • Dr Kendi Guantai, Senior Teaching Fellow, Marketing Division
  • Dr Lisa-Dionne Morris, Associate Professor of Human Activity & Product Design Development, School of Mechanical Engineering
  • Dr Jane Khayesi, Lecturer in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, School of Enterprise and Entrepreneurship
  • Dr Theresa Munyombwe, Lecturer in Biostatistics, School of Medicine
  • Dr Amaka Vanni, Lecturer in Law, School of Law Professor

Louise Bryant said: “It has been a privilege to get to know these extraordinary women academics and we hope this programme helps them fulfil their aspirations here at Leeds. We will also learn from this project how to better support the career development of our brilliant women of colour across all areas of the University.”
