The University’s School of Music, in partnership with the award-winning and critically acclaimed vocal ensemble, ORA Singers, are excited to host the 2022 Composer Competition Final.
The evening will feature new choral works, written by ten finalists, performed and recorded by ORA Singers, and a panel Q&A. The 2022 Competition welcomed 50 young composers, making it the largest run of the scheme since its inception. The ten finalists have each been receiving one-to-one mentoring with ORA-commissioned composers, who have trained them in compositional skills whilst helping them write a new piece to be performed and recorded by ORA Singers in the Competition Final in the School of Music’s state-of-the-art Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall.
ORA Singers is an award-winning vocal ensemble and world-leading commissioner of choral music. In its first five years the group has released nine albums to critical acclaim, performed in the UK, the USA and Europe, had its music and music videos broadcast across the globe (and in every continent including Antarctica) and commissioned over 50 new choral works.
The event will be livestreamed on YouTube, and all viewers – in the Concert Hall and online - will have the opportunity to vote for the Audience Prize. Industry experts form a distinguished panel of adjudicators, which will be chaired by the international best-selling composer, John Rutter.
This new partnership reflects ORA Singers’ ambition to reflect the wide geographical reach the Competition has built over recent years, and the educational focus of the Competition.
