Food Hubs: what are they and what role do they play in fighting food poverty?

The Global Food and Environment Institute (GFEI) invites you to join our May 2023 webinar ‘Food Hubs: what are they and what role do they play in fighting food poverty?’.

During this talk Dr Effie Papargyropoulou Associate Professor in Sustainable Food Networks, University of Leeds, will highlight the findings of her research in this area.

This research is a collaboration between the University of Leeds, Foodwise and Leeds City Council Policy Support Fund by Research England funds this research. It builds on previous work on surplus food redistribution by GFEI: The future of surplus food redistribution in the UK: Reimagining a ‘win-win’ scenario.

We need to move away from emergency provision and support people with sourcing healthy low-cost foods or grow their own.”

Food Hubs in the UK have experienced a proliferation in the last decade, both in numbers and in the diversity of roles they perform. As the COVID-19 pandemic and the cost of living crisis exacerbate growing household food insecurity, Food Hubs have become an integral part of our emergency food provision response.

However, Food Hubs’ positive impact goes beyond just emergency food provision. This research highlights the environmental, social, and economic benefits Food Hubs bring to the communities they serve and the broader food system, and makes the case for policy support and funding.

The event willl start with welcome and introductions from the Chair, followed by a 20-minute webinar presented by Dr Effie Papargyropoulou, and 10 minutes for Q&A.

The seminar will be chaired by Dr Vicki Jenneson.
