Obituary: Bernard Simpson
It is sad to report the death, on 15 May 2004, of Mr Bernard Simpson, former Deputy Director (Technical Services) in the Audio-Visual Service.
Having gained extensive experience of television operations and engineering in posts with the BBC in London and Independent Television in Wales, Mr Simpson was appointed as Television Operations Manager in the University Television Service (later the Audio-Visual Service) in December 1967. His appointment coincided with the establishment of a new Television Centre and Mr Simpson was heavily involved in the planning, construction and commissioning of this facility. Promoted to Deputy Director in 1969, Mr Simpson had close working contacts with teaching staff throughout the University, and with the many visitors to the Centre from this country and abroad. He also published a number of articles in the educational press and specialist journals about technology and education.
Mr Simpson took early retirement from his post in 1984. Writing in the University Review at the time, the then Director of the Audio-Visual Service paid tribute not only to Mr Simpsons professional qualities but also to his humanity and genuine kindness and his unremitting efforts to assist junior members of staff.
