Obituary: Austin Woolrych
It is very sad to have to report the death, earlier this month, of Emeritus Professor Austin Woolrych, FBA. Born in 1918, Professor Woolrych joined the staff of the Department of History at Leeds as an Assistant Lecturer in 1949, subsequently becoming Lecturer and Senior Lecturer. He left Leeds in 1964, to take up appointment as the founding professor of history at the University of Lancaster, where he also served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor from 1971 to 1975.
A leading authority on the civil wars of mid-17th-century England, Professor Woolrych produced some of his most outstanding books, notably 'Soldiers and Statesmen' (1987) and 'Britain in Revolution, 1625-1660' (2002), after his retirement.
A full obituary was published in The Independent (20 September) and The Guardian (23 September).
The funeral service for Professor Woolrych will be in the Anglican Church in Burton-in-Kendal on Friday, 9 October, at 2.00pm.
