Christopher Mowll
We are very sorry to report the death of Dr Christopher Mowll on 18 April 2005.
Dr Mowll was the Clerk to The Clothworkers Company from 1978 until 1992, and a member of the University Court for virtually the whole of this period and again from 1995 to 2001. A qualified Solicitor, Dr Mowll was largely responsible for the setting up of The Clothworkers Foundation, which, as the independent charitable arm of the Company, is one of the larger grant-making trusts in this country. Dr Mowll served as Secretary to the Foundation for many years. He was also active as a trustee of a range of other charitable trusts, serving for forty years on the Council of the Metropolitan Society for the Blind, for over half this time as its Chairman, and also as a member of the Council of the National Library for the Blind, the Executive Council of the RNIB and the Council of the Shaftsbury Society.
In 1992, Dr Mowll was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by the University, in recognition of his charitable work and other achievements. The presentation address at the time made reference to the University having ample cause to value Dr Mowlls friendship, guidance, and ability unobtrusively and constructively to influence people and events.
