John Bowman

We are very sorry to report the death earlier this month of the Reverend Professor John Bowman. Born in 1916, Professor Bowman enjoyed a glittering student career at the Universities of Glasgow and Oxford, being awarded an MA in Semitic Languages and Literature with First Class Honours, and the degree of Bachelor of Divinity with Distinction, by the former and a DPhil by the latter, together with numerous prizes and scholarships. He was appointed Lecturer in Hebrew and Old Testament Studies at Leeds in 1946, and became Head of the Department of Hebrew Language and Literature two years later. He was instrumental in the introduction of the teaching of Arabic by the Department, in recognition of which it was renamed the Department of Semitic Languages and Literatures. Professor Bowman resigned from the University in July 1959, in order to take up the Chair of Semitic Studies at the University of Melbourne.
