Eric Butterworth

We are very sorry to have to report the death of two former members of the Department of Adult Education and Extramural Studies, Mr Eric Butterworth, OBE, and Professor Roger Dyson. Mr Butterworth was a pupil at Leeds Grammar School, where he was Head of School, and went on to read History at Queens' College, Cambridge. Following a brief spell in the Civil Service, he was appointed Administrative Assistant in the Department in 1956, and was made a Lecturer in 1960. Mr Butterworth taught on a number of the University's Extension courses in Middlesbrough and elsewhere, and also forged a continuing interest in the development of immigrant communities. He resigned from Leeds in 1966 in order to take up a post in the Department of Social Administration and Social Work at the University of York. Here, among his other academic achievements, he published a number of very popular sociology textbooks for sixth-formers and undergraduates. In recognition of his work to improve race relations , he was awarded an OBE in 1975. He later taught in Australia. Mr Butterworth died on 14 May. An obituary was published in The Guardian on 5 June.
