John Cannon
Mr John Cannon, Security Officer, died on 4 August 2010.
John joined the University Security Service in April 1990, having served for 12 years in the Royal Air Force. As a member of the RAF Photographic Section, he had an exemplary record for both the quality of his work and his helpful and professional approach. These qualities John brought with him to Leeds. From the outset, he proved to be a mature, capable and reliable team member. He handled the disparate demands made on the University’s security personnel with unfailing assurance and calm authority and, where circumstances required, with tact, diplomacy and sensitivity.
Promoted in 1997, John was a popular and respected colleague, whose cheerful demeanour also made him well-liked within the many sections of the University community with which his responsibilities brought him into contact.
John’s outside interests were many and included reading, music, chess, bridge and watching most sports. He also served on the PTA of his children’s secondary school and had spells as vice-chair and chair.
Very sadly, John was overtaken by chronic ill-health which forced him into early retirement in March of this year.
John, whose wife predeceased him, is survived by sons, Jamie and Ryan.
