Carol Ward

We are very sorry to have to let members know that Mrs Carol Ward, a former Technician in the School of Physics and Astronomy, died on 30 April 2010.

Carol first joined the School in 1976 to work with the cosmic ray group which at that time was running the Haverah Park experiment, based near Harrogate. She managed the collection and distribution of the primary experimental data and was employed in this capacity throughout the lifetime of the project. As the high energy group began to set up its experiment in the South Pole, Carol kept up to date with changes in technology and continued to be the person responsible for moving data and backing it up so that those analysing it had ready access; in some cases, she herself performed the initial analysis. Carols work was not confined to supporting the group on the computing front. She also drafted the first version of publications, using the document preparation system LaTeX, maintained the group archive of all diagrams used in publications and, on a weekly basis, read Astrophysics abstracts and circulated papers of interest to the group. Her role in the department expanded over time and she supported teaching in the undergraduate laboratories. Carol, who is remembered as a considerate and capable colleague, retired in September 2005.
