Robert Bowes
Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death, on 27 July 2017, of Robert Bowes, Social Work Tutor in the School of Healthcare. The following tribute has been contributed by members of his team.
Robert had been a colleague with the social work team for many years. He initially engaged in education as a Practice Educator, before becoming a part-time Tutor, and offered practice placements for social work students with the agency NCH Action for Children. He also taught students applied practice in relation to working with children and families. Robert retired early from his role as a manager at NCH Action for Children, and took up the role of a part-time Tutor with the social work team at University of Leeds in November 2010.
He was a gentle, wise and kind colleague who enjoyed his work. He went the extra mile for his tutor groups and loved his work supporting them to develop their professional and academic skills. He was a positive person and a good team member, always offering to support other colleagues with their work commitments. In the last 2 years he had taken on the extra role to support and encourage service users and carers to be actively involved in the social work education. The Service User and Carer Group have been devastated by the news of his loss, and remember his warm, cheerful disposition and support. Robert will be greatly missed by the team, students, carers and service users. Robert was married to Trudy and they would have celebrated 40 years of marriage next year.
The funeral service will be held at 11.30am on Thursday 17th August at Goldthorpe Parish Church (Lockwood Road, Goldthorpe, S63 9JY), followed by burial at Dodworth Cemetery (Green Road, Dodsworth, S75 3RS) at 1.00 pm. Refreshements will be served afterwards at the Fairway Hotel (near Dodworth railway station).
The flag on the Parkinson Building will be flown at half-mast on the day of the funeral in Robert’s memory.
