Brian Chesworth

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the sudden death, on 2 May 2019, of Brian Chesworth, Technician in the Mechanical Workshop in the School of Physics and Astronomy.  The following tribute has been contributed by his friends and colleagues.

Brian Chesworth joined the Physics Department in 1975 as a member of the Stores, which at the time was a substantial enterprise staffed by three people and served the offices, laboratories and teaching facilities.  He came to Physics from the AA, where he had worked for many years helping motorists on their way, but was forced to leave due to back trouble.  ‘Helpful’ is the adjective that was applied to Brian by those who encountered him.  He was involved in the organisation of every social event in the department and was especially relied upon to procure the liquid refreshment.

He went the extra mile to ensure that goods were delivered and was particularly keen on checking all the details so that the receipt of large instruments for the research labs went smoothly.  He became an expert in Customs and Excise, and saved the University large sums of money by skilful negotiation of the complex paperwork of importing goods.  On many occasions we needed Brian to telephone Customs to extract impounded goods!  His expertise became well-known and other quarters of the University consulted Brian for help with imports.  Brian was ‘first’ in many ways, and seemed to have a direct line to Arthur Guinness’s brewery.  When they introduced the widget into cans to produce draught beer, Brian had one before they were available in the shops.  A keen clay pigeon shooter, he won several competitions when he wasn’t enjoying his bolthole in the Lake District.
