Gerry Leaf

Colleagues will be sorry learn of the recent death of Dr G A V Leaf, former Reader in the Department of Textile Industries, who had recently celebrated his 90th birthday. The following tribute has been contributed by Professor D W Lloyd and Dr S Harlock.

Gerry graduated in Mathematics from the University of London in 1950 and took up a post in the Statistics Department at the Hosiery and Allied Trades Research Association (known commonly as ‘HATRA’).  He subsequently gained an MSc from the University of London and, in 1965, was appointed to the post of Lecturer in Textile Engineering at the University of Leeds.  In 1970, he was promoted to Senior Lecturer and in 1986 to Reader in Textile Engineering (a post he held until his retirement in 1993).  He was well known internationally and had spent short periods abroad (holding visiting positions at the Indian Institute of Technology, at North Carolina State University, at the University of New South Wales and at Hong Kong Polytechnic University).  He was awarded a Doctor of Science (DSc) in 1984 and, a year later, the Warner medal from the Textile Institute.  He was a Fellow of both the Royal Statistical Society and the Textile Institute.  He is survived by two daughters.

The funeral will be held at 1.00pm on 9 August 2019 at Lawnswood Crematorium, Otley Road, Leeds, LS16 8AA. The family have requested no flowers, but donations can be made to St Gemma’s Hospice or to Cancer Research.

The flag on the Parkinson Building will be flown at half-mast on the day of the funeral in his memory.
