Turnitin - Marking with the App

The Turnitin App will allow you to mark student assessments using the iPad even if you do not have a Wi-Fi connection.

The app is currently only available for iPad and you should follow the brief steps below to configure your device. Importantly, you will need to download papers to the device when you have an internet connection, to allow offline marking later on.

Setting up the App

Adding Assignments

To access assignments on the app, you need to give permission for the app to read the data from Minerva. You will need to get permission for each module you want to access on the app. To do this, go to the relevant module on Minerva and navigate to a Turnitin assignment, as if you were going to mark it.

Once the assignment is open in the document viewer, click the Information icon in the grey section of the toolbar.

If you are accessing Minerva via an iPad browser (Chrome or Safari), you will get an Add Class button to launch the module within the Turnitin app. You will need to confirm that you want to open the class within the app before receiving confirmation that the module has been added.

If you are accessing Minerva via a PC then you will need to enter your University email address twice and click Email Me to generate the email with permissions. On your iPad, access your emails and find the one from Turnitin. Click the Add Class button to launch the module within the Turnitin app.

Both methods will provide the same confirmation message that the class access has been enabled.

All of the modules you have added will be displayed on the Turnitin module page. You will need to add each module in the same way to gain access to assignments.

When you enter an assignment area, you will get a similar interface to what you see in Minerva. You have a range of sorting and filtering options along the top which will allow you to customise your viewing window.

Next to each submission you are presented with the standard submission information, including date of submission, mark for the assignment and the similarity percentage.

To mark offline without a Wi-fi or data connection, you will need to make sure that the papers have been downloaded to the device. To do this, click the Download icon (to the left of the submission) and allow all the papers to download whilst you have a connection.

Account Administration

The app will try to automatically sync papers back to Minerva whenever you access a wireless connection. Syncs will not occur when the iPad has no internet connection or is on a data connection.

You can manually perform a sync by selecting the menu icon on the Course Homepage and selecting Sync Now.

This menu will also allow you to Log Out. Selected log out will remove all modules and assessments from the app, for good. You will have to select confirm on a warning message to continue with the log out.


Marking with the App

Overview Screen

When you click into a paper to mark, you will be presented with the Overview Screen. This is the interface from where you can add coments, highlight text, add a summary comment, add the final grade and use the Rubric/Grading Form.

How to use all the options from the Overview Screen are on the tabs above, but here is a summary of the screen:

  1. Access to the additional marking tools. Here you can access the Rubric, a full page Summary comments form, record a Voice Comment and view the Similarity Report.
  2. This is the quick way to add a Summary Comment whilst you are still viewing the paper. Notes can be made in this box and edited further using the full page view if required.
  3. The main marking area starts from where you can see the submission. All comments will be added inline, alongside the paper.
  4. The Final Grade can be entered by clicking the pencil or number in the top right hand corner.

Tap where you wish to add a comment to see the marking features available. You will have the same marking options as on the desktop version.

A tap on the submission will load a box with the 3 main comments types:

  • Quickmark – These will be the same as if you were on a PC. You can select from your saved QuickMarks and add them to the document. You can select from the different sets with the menu button.
  • Bubble Comment – You can add a bubble comment to the document for detailed feedback. If you want to reuse them, bubble comments can be added to your QuickMarks by clicking Save as Quickmark. You will then get the second screen which will ask for a title and where to save the comment.
  • Inline Text Comment – This allows text to be placed directly in the document.

Using highlights and strikethough

To highlight or strikethrough text, select the text by holding your finger down on the line you want to comment on. This can then be changed by using the sliders until you have the selection that you require.

You can add either a Quickmark, Bubble Highlight or Strikethrough.

Edit, Move and Delete Comments

  • You can edit a comment by clicking on the comment in the document.
  • You can move comments by holding your finger on the comment and dragging it to the new location.
  • You can delete a comment by clicking on it in the document and selecting the bin symbol.

Final Comments

You can leave the final Summary Comment in two different places. The quick comment area will always be visible just above the paper and this can be used as you are reviewing the submission. You can either write the full comment in this area or write notes to help shape the comment at a later stage.

To access the full comment area, select the Summary Comment button from the Overview Screen. This will load a larger text area and will contain any comments made in the quick view.

To add an audio comment, select the Voice Comment button from the Overview Screen.

The page will not change, but the recording bar will have appeared at the bottom of the screen. Click the red record button to begin your audio comment.

The comment can be up to 3 minutes in length and will use the built in iPad microphone. Once the recording is finished, the bar will remain at the bottom of the paper at all times, to signify a voice comment has been left, unless you click the Hide button.


Rubrics

A rubric is a way of marking an assignment that shows how the student has performed against the success criteria. Grading Forms can also be accessed through this method.

To mark how a student has performed against the rubric, select the Rubric button from the Overview Screen and then select each area by tapping the box. This information will save automatically and you can go back by clicking the cross in the top left hand corner.

Similarity Reports

By default, the Similarity Report is turned off within the app. It can be enabled by selecting the Similarity button from the Overview Screen and selecting the toggle button.

This will overlay the Similarity Report on top of the submission document; numbered and coloured like the web view. The report can be turned off in the same way.

When viewing a submission, you can select the i icon in the top right hand corner to view further Submission Information. This includes the Paper ID, Submission Date, File Name, File Size, Word Count etc.
